[mukto-mona] Nizami: The measure of a man's real character

Nizami, the chief of the Al - Badar, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami and a former minister in the previous BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government, Nizami is the last of the chiefs of the three major political parties – after Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia – to have been arrested in the anticorruption crackdown by the interim government. The measure of this man's real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out. Anybody can become angry -that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy."

Dear Alochoks

Anwar Chowdhury is a great man and his sincere love for Bangladesh is
evident. He played his role to the fullest extent possible. Many
accuse him of meddling but it was his duty to do what any well wisher
would have done in his place.

He will forever be a favourite son of Bangladesh.

[ALOCHONA] What is a bad leader?

Dear Mr. Hossain,

I will give you credit - you are not afraid to use your name in this forum, unlike that Mahathir lover.

Now to the heart of the matter - something that I really want to understand. When do you consider a leader inept? I am sure you love Bangladesh as much as anyone else. But what does it take for a leader to be considered a failure? Where do you draw the line?

Khaleda Zia became Prime Minister of Bangladesh on her own credit and elected by the people. She was not there by virtue of the mighty gun. 99% of Bangladeshis belong to lower-middle or middle class. To what class Mr Ezajur belong to? To what class Gen Moen Uddin Ahmed belong to? Royal class? Are you asking us to worship you? Sorry I am not worshiping Hasina or Khaleda. Both of them are leading two large political parties for more than two decades. They posses strong leadership qualities. Your Gen Moen has tried to form one political party with the help of C grade politicians and Nobel Prize winner but has failed to even kick off.

These army boot lickers have lost their minds.

Dear Alochoks

Or perhaps I should prefer the State visit of Khaleda to Kuwait a
couple of years ago. Yes, perhaps her visit was more dignified than
the visit of Moeen U Ahmed.

She wanted to buy some jewellery. She was advised that the finest
jewellers in Kuwait would happily take a wide selection of pieces to
her hotel. She was advised to go to a prestigious location. But she
took the advice of some idiots and went to one of the worst gold
markets in Kuwait. As she walked through the shops onlookers were
bemused by her entourage. Who is she? Why is she here? The market
that seldom saw an upper middle class Indian was now graced by the
Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Of course our jonogonists will say she went to the shops of the common man. But of course she bought nothing
there and in the end went to an exclusive shop and purchased a few
trinkets and baubles - costing well beyond the dreams of the common
man. Any idea how much she spent?

Good old Bangladeshi democracy.

It's a slapstick comedy.

[mukto-mona] A roadmap to wilderness?

A roadmap to wilderness?

Mozammel H. Khan

Since its inception in 1971, more than once, Bangladesh has been on the crossroad. The most recent such critical juncture gave rise to so-called one eleven that resulted in the promulgation of emergency and the consequent suspension of the fundamental rights of its citizens. The provision of emergency was incorporated in the constitution to tackle the situation "threatened by war or external aggression or internal disturbance." People by and large welcomed the emergency with the hope that the resulting CTG would hold a fair and credible election to return the country to a representative democracy.
However, since its assumption of absolute power, the 'power' behind the government extended its jurisdiction into many arenas which the article 58 D of the constitution does not permit the CTG to set its foot onto. To accomplish its self promulgated task, it has included the draconian provision reads as, "any person, convicted of corruption by a trial court, will be disqualified from contesting in any election until adjudication of his or her appeal against the verdict", in the Emergency Power Rule (EPR) that runs counter to the article 66 (2)D of the constitution, where the 'conviction' has to be adjudicated by the Appellate division of the Supreme court before barring any one from taking part in any election. The EPR has given the authority blanket power to arrest any one and put behind bar without bail for any period of time. The potential principal victims of this EPR are the top politicians, which in general belief, are the main targets of the authority in their pursuits 'to create a level playing field for a free and fair election'. The reconstituted ACC under the able leadership of its chief has taken advantage of the EPR to arrest and prosecute, largely the politicians, in its self-professed drive against corruption, albeit corruption has no direct correlation with the 'internal disturbance', the main pretext for the declaration of emergency. So far numerous politicians, including their wives in many cases, have been prosecuted, mostly on broad (in some case vague) charges of 'accumulating unaccountable wealth' or 'concealing wealth in their wealth statement'. There were stories all around about the scale of corruption many of these politicians have been indulged themselves into. However, charges of conviction against them failed to unveil any specific charges against them. Since all the convictions have taken place under EPR, not in the normal law of the land, it is yet to be seen how far their convictions have impacted their constituents in terms of sealing their political fate. If the past history of trials and convictions under any draconian law e.g. martial law, is anything to take cognizance into, it failed to create any dent onto the elect ability of the convicts. The longest serving finance minister, leader of the so-called 'reformist' faction of BNP until the other day, is a glaring example of that resilience.
I personally would like to concur with the belief that the ACC chief is not in pursuit to implement the agenda of any quarter. In fact, his bureau's action, quite to the contrary, has seemingly thwarted such an agenda by throwing the detrimental blow to the reformist group of the BNP that was created in a midnight coup. If it is so, it is the high time for the ACC chief to take a short pause and evaluate if trying the corruption cases under the EPR has been doing any boomeranging effect to his otherwise noble pursuit. Corruption is an endemic disease in Bangladesh society and it can never be eliminated by a transient law such as EPR. It must be an ongoing process that should be having an everlasting effect. Knowingly or unknowingly, the ACC should never be a part of any agenda allegedly pursued by the power behind the government.
At the beginning of the tenure of CTG, two of the advisers (one of them is gone since then) were lecturing the nation that it was not their responsibility to rehabilitate the 'disgraced' politicians (they meant the two ladies) of the past. However, the subsequent imprudent actions of the incumbent government, in fact, did exactly the same. Sheikh Hasina was not a 'disgraced' leader before one eleven in the first place. It was widely believed that her party would win any fair election before the happenings of one eleven. Her internment since last year and the public perception of little merit of her incriminations in multiple legal suits has boosted her image not only among her followers but her foes as well. The BNP and the Jamat-I- Islami are trying to ride onto her co-tail and demanding her unconditional release. The ultimate crumbling of the reformist faction of the BNP only testified of the resurgence of the political stature of Khalida Zia and had sent the much-talked about reform in the back burner.
Under the above backdrop, the pre-dialogue of the five very articulate advisers with the politicians and the hope, through their optimistic words such as creation of trust, they aroused among the citizens made the nation optimistic. However, the much-awaited address of the chief adviser (CA) ran not only counter to the optimism the five advisers' disclosures over the weeks have generated, but also poured freezing water on that optimism. What he has outlined was nothing new and they are more of rhetoric than substance. The main impediment to having a free and fair election at this time is the draconian power of the state of emergency that gave the government the power to arrest any one (ACC chief disclosed that his bureau was not consulted on any arrest) without even any pre-laid charges and try any one for any 'unaccountable income' under EPR, not a difficult charge to frame against millions in our society. This tram card could be discriminately used against whoever the authorities want to debar from taking part in the election. The CA in his address only indicated that the "provisions of the emergency rules pertaining to election would be relaxed or suspended at an appropriate time". In a rare unity, most of the political parties those who matter, except for a few political orphans, have rejected his address outright.
As it looks now, it is very uncertain if the dialogue would at all take place with the two major stakeholders. In the words of one of the highly prudent advisers, "the situation will become serious if the two parties do not join the dialogue. What outcome the dialogue will bring then?" On the other hand, if it does, the ball would be largely in the court of the government. If it wants to hide behind the legal process, as every incumbent government intends to do, pertaining to the release of the two leaders, the least it could do is to withdraw the state of emergency that would enable the two leaders to get bail and face the legal suits against them under the normal law of the land. If the CA fails to convince his 'assisting power' to take the route of conciliation rather than confrontation, he will be leading the nation to nowhere as envisaged by the adviser. As the highly revered citizen of the Republic with apparently no personal political agenda of his own, he should be having no problem reading the pulse of the nation. If he fails to do so, the roadmap to election would be transformed into a roadmap to wilderness.

[ALOCHONA] Jamaat: Nizam arrested in late night raid

Nizami arrested in late night raid
Courtesy New Age 19/5/08

Law enforcers on Sunday night arrested former industries minister and chief of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh, Matiur Rahman Nizami, at his Bara Maghbazar apartment.
Metropolitan sessions judge Azizul Haque on May 15 ordered his arrest as an accused in the GATCO graft case.
Large contingents of police and intelligence personnel in plainclothes, led by deputy commissioner of Ramna zone, Atiqul Islam, cordoned off the Green Valley Apartment located at 493, Bara Maghbazar, Wireless Rail Gate at around 9:45pm.
Police officials along with some intelligence personnel in plainclothes entered his flat on the fourth floor of the apartment along with the warrant at around 9:55pm and came out taking Nizami with them at around 11:15pm.
Some three platoons of law enforcers took position in the surroundings as leaders and activists of the party gathered at the entrance to the apartment and the party office.
As Nizami walked towards the police vehicle parked 30 yards from his apartment, the party activists chanted slogans.
The law enforcers also conducted a raid at the house of, MK Anwar, another former minister, at Elephant Road Sunday night but failed to nab him as he was out of home.
Meanwhile, Jamaat has announced a four-day programme of Nawfil fasting and feeding the poor across the country seeking divine intervention to protect the nation from ‘conspiracy and repression’, Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Mujahid told a press conference at the party office Sunday afternoon.
Earlier on the day, two other accused in the GATCO scam case – BNP stalwarts Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan and Shamsul Islam – were sent to jail after they surrendered to the court.
Charged under the Emergency Power Rules that denies an accused bail, Nizami moved the High Court on the day seeking bail. The High Court, however, summarily rejected the prayer. Nizami’s counsel Abdur Razzaque then rushed to the Appellate Division seeking stay of the High Court order. The Appellate Division chamber judge referred the matter to the full court for hearing on May 20.

[mukto-mona] Bloodiest day

Most of you, I assume, read the ToI edit along with the news that yesterday was the bloddiest-ever polling day in West Bengal. The police minister - the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee - who has been formally looking after law and order since 1996 (actually, informally, from 1993). During his regime, Suchpur (Nanoor, Birbhum district), Keshpur, Nandigram and numerous killings took place, proving his incompetence or deliberate inaction.

Reproduced are ToI edit and news.

18 die on bloodiest day of polls  by Saikat Ray, Subrata Mukherjee & Someswar Boral 19 May 08 (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Kolkata_/18_die_on_bloodiest_day_of_polls/articleshow/3052022.cms)
BEHRAMPORE/SURI: West Bengal witnessed the bloodiest round of violence in the last phase of the panchayat polls on Sunday, leaving 18 dead and hundreds injured in Murshidabad and Birbhum.

The highest body count was in Murshidabad, where 16 persons were killed.

The toll in this year's elections stands at 30, making it the bloodiest in Bengal's history, surpassing even the 2003 death count. Scores more are battling for life in hospitals across all seven districts that went to the polls.

That is because the stakes are much higher than the panchayat and zilla parishad seats. With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled next year, the ruling CPM is desperate to gain territorial control over the state, marginalize the

Opposition, and even Left Front partners RSP and Forward Bloc, which have been critical of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's policies.

The CPM's main targets were the Murshidabad and Malda zilla parishads, which were controlled by Congress. CPM is desperate to curb Congress' prospects in the coming Parliament elections, while Congress is fighting tooth and nail to retain these bastions, which sent heavyweights Pranab Mukherjee and Priya Ranjan Das Munshi to the Lok Sabha in the last elections.

On Sunday, when violence spread like wildfire across the district, outnumbered security personnel could do little but run here and there to mop up after clashes.

Domkal was the vortex of the bloodbath. Marjina Biwi, wife of Nazrul Islam, one of the victims in Ghoramara, recalled the horror: "One second he was standing in queue with me, the next moment he was no more. I heard a gunshot and he collapsed in front of me."

Allegations flew as thick as the bombs and bullets. "Congress unleashed a reign of terror. Police remained a mute spectator," alleged CPM MLA from Domkal and animal husbandry minister Anisur Rehman. CPM state secretary Biman Bose, too, blamed Congress. "They had threatened violence a day before the polls. Congress was determined to provoke violence in Domkal, Raninagar and Beldanga," Bose said.

Congress strongman Adhir Chowdhury accused the CPM of "state-sponsored terrorism". "Our supporters could not even reach the polling booths because CPM was hand-in-glove with a section of the police and attacked our men," Chowdhury said.

Even district magistrate Subir Bhadra and IG (South Bengal) Surojit Kar Purokayastha were not spared. Hoodlums hurled bombs at the duo while they were rushing to Kupila village in Domkal to defuse an explosive situation. They escaped unhurt.

The Red brigade didn't spare its Left Front partners either. CPM goons torched houses and looted ballot boxes in RSP strongholds in Birbhum. Two persons were killed in Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar.
>>
Hammer, Sickle, Bombs 19 May 08 (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Editorial/Hammer_Sickle_Bombs/articleshow/3051499.cms)

It is rare that ministers speak so candidly in public. Two ministers of the Left Front government in West Bengal have gone on record about the arsenals their respective parties stock to fight political battles. RSP minister Kshiti Goswami regrets that his party has only hand bombs whereas CPM cadre carry light machine guns, muskets, revolvers and explosives.

Besides the weapons, the minister added, the CPM has the backing of the police and the civil administration. Abdur Razzak Molla, the CPM minister, didn't deny his colleague's allegations; he said that violent clashes were inevitable because it's a turf war out there.

The ministers have only revealed the truth about politics in West Bengal, which appears to flow from the barrel of a gun. Unfortunately, even senior leaders who are part of the government are unwilling to recognise that they are reducing democracy to a sham. Political parties compete to build and expand their bases, sure. But should they do it by refusing to yield space to competitors?

The recent RSP-CPM clashes are hardly ideological but aimed at achieving territorial control. They reflect a total disregard for a fundamental feature of democratic politics: Democracy is a battle of ideas that ought to be resolved through debate and dialogue in a peaceful manner. The participants are morally and legally bound to respect the right of their rivals to espouse views and ideals.

Senior Left Front leaders like Jyoti Basu have called for restraint among allies. That's understandable because the invincibility of the Left Front government - the coalition has been in office since 1977 - is largely because of the cohesive nature of the alliance. A split within the Left Front can seriously damage its electoral prospects.

Basu, one of the architects of the coalition and its leader in government for more than two decades, is well aware of the consequences of Left Front allies turning against each other. But a statesman like him should look beyond the needs of the Left Front and impress upon party members and allies to adopt an accommodative political culture.

The authoritarian ways of parties like CPM have had a brutalising effect on politics and development in the state. The continuing violence in places like Nandigram is because of the party's refusal to recognise the democratic right of the people to disagree with the government's policies.

There's no point blaming the opposition or fringe elements like Maoists for ushering in a political culture of violence. If it continues in this manner, the tide is going to turn against the CPM at some point.

[mukto-mona] Media & CPM

Yesterday, according to Ananda Bazar Patrika, there were 15 deaths in poll clashes in Murshidabad district, which CPI(M) leaders were confident of wresting back from the Congress. Left From chairman and CPI(M) polit bureau member Biman Bose predicted weeks back that there would be bloodshed during the 3-tier panchayat polls. Congress MP of Murshidabad district Adhir Chowdhury (mafia don, acc. to CPI(M), but Robin Hood to non-political masses) said in a TV interview alleged that the CPI(M) imported roughs from Burdwan and Nadia districts and unless there are elaborate security arrangements, bloodsheds apart, free & fair poll might not be possible.

It may be too early to say anything about what really happened but the possibility of resistance from action squads of Congress might have led to too many deaths.

YET KOLKATA's LEADING DAILY THE TELEGRAPH PREFERRED ENTERTAINER IPL NEWS ON FRONTPAGE AND CARRIED NO NEWS ON PANCHAYAT POLLS ON THE FRONT PAGE. BUT IT CARRIED A NATIONAL STORY ON REAL ESTATE PLANS OF CPI(M).

CPM set to land a red face  by Hemendra Singh Bartwal 19 May 08 (http://telegraphindia.com/1080519/jsp/frontpage/story_9290656.jsp
Party to get allotment along road named after Sangh icon
New Delhi, May 18: The CPM is expanding its presence in Delhi, foraying into the heart of a Sangh parivar hub. Literally.
The Marxists, not content with their large headquarters building, A.K. Gopalan Bhavan, plan to build a larger office in Delhi. They have sought land from the Centre under a new scheme that grants plots to political parties at subsidised rates, the size depending on a party's strength in the two Houses of Parliament. (See chart)
Sources said the urban development ministry has decided to allot four prime plots to the CPM in Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Marg.
That could be slightly embarrassing for the Marxists, for Upadhyay happens to be a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh icon.
It's ironical too: political lore has it that the CPM had masterminded the renaming of Harrington Street to Ho Chi Minh Sarani in Calcutta during the Vietnam war only to give the US consulate located there a red face.
At the new office, the CPM will have as its neighbours several Sangh-affiliated organisations, such as Sanskar Bharti, Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh, Bhartiya Kisan Sangh and Sewa International. The previous NDA government had virtually turned DDU Marg and its neighbourhood into a saffron enclave, drawing Left accusations of "favouritism" in plot allotment.
Sitaram Yechury and Prakash Karat can now expect to find their path crossed regularly by the likes of Ashok Singhal and Praveen Togadia since the Vishwa Hindu Parishad is building its media centre in DDU Marg.
The CPI and the CPM were the first of the political parties to buy government plots and build their offices many years ago, under an old policy that allowed land grants to institutions – educational, social or political.
The new scheme allows the CPM, which has 58 MPs, one acre. However, the Bhai Vir Singh Marg plot where the A.K. Gopalan Bhavan stands is only 1,197sqm. So, the party will be given the balance 2,850sqm in DDU Marg close to the CPI central office, Ajoy Bhavan, on the adjoining Kotla Road.
The plot's market price should be Rs 40-50 crore but the CPM will have to pay only about Rs 60 lakh, since the subsidised rate is Rs 88 lakh an acre.
What if the party's strength falls in the next election? Sources said that  once a plot has been allotted, its size cannot change according to the party's poll fortunes.
Many other parties are rushing to get plots in the locality, too, thanks to a June 2006 Supreme Court order that asked party offices to clear out of the Lutyens Bungalow Zone.
The court asked the government to give land to the parties, which must build their offices at their own expense, prompting the framing of the new allotment policy. Among the offices to be vacated are the Congress and BJP headquarters in Akbar Road and Ashoka Road.
Last year, the Congress was allotted two acres in DDU Marg. The Rashtriya Janata Dal has bought a half-acre plot and the Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena, too, are said to have sought land.
But the BJP is sitting tight. It isn't clear if the party plans to hold out till the next election, hoping to win more seats and bag a larger plot.
Sources said the scheme doesn't spell out whether a party's strength in the current (14th) Lok Sabha alone should count.
The apex court set no deadline for plot allotment, merely saying parties must move out of the bungalow zone within three years of getting land.

Re: [mukto-mona] Prophet Muhmmad: "An apostle, not a king"

In those days, religion and politics were synonymous. If the prophet didn't
become the ruler of Madina first, he wouldn't have succeeded in becoming the
preacher who conquered his homeland Mecca. Yet, he preferred to live in the
city he conquered. He couldn't trust Abu Sufian and his followers.

with top hats, gold braid, and collars.
The tiny palace gleams like a watch
and the rapid laughs with gloves on
cross the corridors at times
and join the dead voices
and the blue mouths freshly buried.
The weeping cannot be seen, like a plant
whose seeds fall endlessly on the earth,
whose large blind leaves grow even without light.
Hatred has grown scale on scale,
blow on blow, in the ghastly water of the swamp,
with a snout full of ooze and silence

One of my very learned friends detests poetry as a bourgeois culture. His notion is that only hammer and sickle is the real culture because it's related to productivity and productivity is the basic need for human survival. After listening to him I remembered Kevin Costner's movie 'Water'. I never watched such a dry movie full of junk, rust and steel in my entire life. There is no doubt that human hunger surpasses all other needs but is it the only identity we carry? Karl Marx may be very famous for his Das Capital or the Communist Manifesto but we as his posterity does not know about his other traits as a human being.  I always maintained a deep interest in this man which led me to visit his grave in Highgate cemetery in England. I found a deeply materialistic man who read Friedrich Hegel well but understood him in a very limited way. Looking at the grave nestling under the tall trees I found this Proletarian revolutionary at peace with nature a perfect place to compose a poem.
There is no doubt that hunger can't be removed by poetry but does poetry a simple pass time alone? If life orbits around food only as human beings where do we excel? Our passion, our emotion, our creativity and ingenuity is of no value? Why we have created this civilization with so much of fan fare where physical hunger does not rule? Personally I feel that our life which is a tiny particle of the eternity has proved to be a gorgeous one because we spanned ourselves far beyond the sphere of physical hunger. Our creativeness in literature, art, dancing and songs are like the colourful butterflies decorating the entire gamut of our existence. Looking at a very ordinary object with a passionate cultural interest make it a thing of beauty. As Tagore said, when I see this world through a song then I know her.
Poetry is composed of some chosen words which invokes imagination followed by passion. Our mind is always pregnant with a flood of passion and emotion which unfurls itself in poetry. The aim of poetry is not to explain things it rather pushes us to point of explosion. Our life becomes larger than then we know. A lofty world whispers that our mission is beyond our imagination.
